So, libertarians and republicans..
FEMA… YOU didn’t build that. Go ahead and take THAT shit out of context…
Before I get on with it, yes this is election related. I know I said I wouldn’t write another “election” article. I had to. Deal with it.
So after Hurricane Sandy washed ashore in the northeast, NJ Governor Chris Christie, despite his 80’s porno name, had some glowing words for President Barack Obama. This is a far cry from his assertion mere months ago that “…there’s only one thing missing now. Leadership. It takes leadership that you don’t get from reading a poll. You see, Mr. President, real leaders don’t follow polls. Real leaders change polls…”
Imagine my surprise when I read this, and saw the various postings on Facebook by my (mostly) well-informed friends that Christie was praising the absolute shit out of President Obama. I was almost proud to be from South Jersey.
But, I digress…
Christie further went on to say that “I’ve got a job to do here in New Jersey that’s much bigger than presidential politics, and I could care less about any of that stuff. I have a job to do. I’ve got 2.4 million people out of power. I’ve got devastation on the Shore. I’ve got floods in the northern part of my state. If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics, then you don’t know me.”
(Not to be a nitpicker here, but it’s “I couldn’t care less”, Chris. Saying “I could care less implies that you care a LOT and as such could conceivably care less, as you consider it important. That’s how English comparisons work. “No Child Left Behind” apparently applies to politicians as well… But, as I said, I nitpick.)
Despite my assertion when seeing a picture of Atlantic City underwater that “nothing of value was lost”, I feel pretty good about what Christie had to say. In this instance, Governor Christie, President Obama, FEMA, and the Red Cross have stepped up to the plate and really done something amazing…
They have worked together for the first time since before Hurricane Katrina to actually provide relief and not photo opportunities for the Commander in Chief.
I personally hope that America takes note that while Obama was knee-deep in crisis management, that Mitt Romney was in Ohio trying to convince more impressionable people that he wasn’t batshit crazy-evil. It should also bear mentioning that Christie could have been saying what he did for the purpose of appearing non-partisan and pandering to the votes of those in the undecided column, as well as galvanizing his already rabid base.
Maybe in the face of real adversity, American Republicans can finally look at their party dogma as idle shit while considering that when push came to shove, the brunt of relief came at the expense of a Democratic administration, not the doctrines that governed their voting habits. I salute Chris Christie for realizing what was important.
This disaster showed who the real leader of this country was. Fuck Mitt Romney.
